Dave East earned a national reputation, a Nas co-sign and a Def Jam deal by being one of the sharpest, street-oriented pens around. As he preps his major label debut however, East switches gears for the radio-ready “Perfect,” a sultry R&B collaboration that still leaves room for East’s stern demeanor to pull through.
East’s forthcoming project is titled Paranoia, and he’s been teasing the EP in recent weeks, with help from Kevin Durant, Monica and more. For his first act, “Perfect,” East celebrates the awe-inspiring physical qualities of his love interest, keeping a steady pace on the eerie bell-infused instrumental. It’s a noted departure from much of East’s past work, especially the unforgivingly gritty Kairi Chanel mixtape he released last year, but much like past Harlem love anthems, the combination of guts and romantic glory is one that carries unending potential.
Paranoia drops August 18. In the meantime, listen to the track below.
