Over the weekend, the REVOLT Music Conference went down in Miami featuring panels and performances from the biggest names in hip-hop, culminating Saturday night with a gala where Puff Daddy helped honor Nas with the Jimmy Iovine Icon Award. Puffy made the night even more special with a heartfelt speech where he dubbed the Brooklyn native a “true example of black excellence.”
From there, Puff recalled the pair’s come up into music as they both navigated the industry. “We was up in the clubs rocking. We on top of each other in shootouts in the clubs. It was really that crazy, but at the end of the day, we had our shows to do,” he said before speaking to the rapper’s character. “Anybody that knows Nas knows that he’s the type of person to leave you with a jewel. He’s the type of person that’s going to come and uplift a situation. He’s going to add knowledge to anything and positivity to anything that he does.”
Nas commemorated the moment and shared it with fans on his Instagram, thanking REVOLT for the honor while sharing a personal message to people who have helped and inspired him along the way including Andre Harrell and Steve Stoute. “We’ve all been thru serious trying times. So to see these men standing strong for so many years and getting stronger by the day…its inspiration. It’s encouragement. And empowering,” wrote Nas.
Things got especially personal in Nas’ message for Puff, which thanked him while praising Puff’s own achievements. “Thanks for the friendship. For being my brother. We’re two crazy mfa’s who somehow figured it out for ourselves. But you are a Leader that we ALL learned from! Truly humbled by the Honor King. The future is ours. Let’s continue to pave the way. Love.”
