Don Cornelius the Creator of “Soul Train,” Dead at Age 75

“Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius was found dead in his Los Angeles home early this morning. This is again is another major loss for our community on the first day of Black History Month….

While details are still being confirmed, early reports said that Cornelius shot himself in the head in his Sherman Oaks, California home.

Cornelius who is is largely credited as being a pioneer in the development of urban culture through music on television. Launched “Soul Train” in Chicago in 1970 and it quickly became a seminal part of black culture, featuring the hottest music, fashion and dancing. He hosted the show until 1993 and in addition to his mellifluous voice and of-the-moment style, he became known for his signature sign-off: “I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soooooouuuuullllllll.”

“Don Cornelius and his creation of ‘Soul Train’ and its legacy had a great impact on American culture. Don’s vision allowed for African-American artists to be exposed to people all over the world through the power of television,” said Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, who wrote the #1 theme song for Soul Train.
