Dj Tool Of The Day: NAMM 2011 – Behringer DJX900USB Mixer.

Behringer are bloody huge – so huge in fact that they have their own town in China that does all their manufacturing. But in recent times, their DJ offering has been less than compelling. But they’ve taken on some key people to get things back on track as well as a new corporate ID, and first out of the box are a handful of mixers. They’ve been on the starting blocks for a little while now, and are a mere indicator of the goodness in store. First up is the DJX900USB.

  • Pushing through the usual marketing speak, we find a pretty decent 4 (although they claim 5, which really is the mic) channel mixer, with send and receive and 3 outputs, as well as a dedicated USB in/out too. No XLRs here which for some is a deal breaker, but there have to be compromises to keep the price down. And as I always point out, The Rane 56 never had XLR either and nobody missed it.

It seems that Behringer have standardised on an uprated Infinium crossfader. This is music to my ears as I love the Infinium in my Rodec. And having curve controls on the 900USB does hopefully make this a decent 4 channel wallet friendly mixer.

I couldn’t help but notice the passing similarity to Pioneer’s DJM700 – especially the K model. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it’s really hard to define yourself in the marketplace if you don’t have your own ID. I hope that the new blood at Behringer can move things on and elevate them from being a throwaway DJ brand into something a little more. God knows they have the resources – way more than any other DJ manufacturer on the planet.
